Why the tension goes

In long-term relationships the tension collapses through familiarity and comfort. There is no more novelty, no more provocation. You are in a safe place, and safety on its own does not create charge.

When arousal is mismatched and one person seems less up for sex than the other, it is often not the sex that needs to be resolved. It is the intimacy.

Polarity is a state you choose

Polarity is not a personality. It is a state you inhabit, and you can inhabit it deliberately. If your partner is stressed, you take the lead: lie down, I am going to give you a massage. You have just moved into the giving position, and they have been given permission to do nothing, to respond to nothing, to receive. Receiving is difficult for most people, and it is where the charge builds.

Show full desire, and hold the mastery to hold back. That is how attraction is created.

"The more you can share reality, the more intimacy you can experience."

Three practices

These work in sequence. The first clears the space. The second builds attunement and boundary. The third returns your arousal to you.

Practice one

Emotional hygiene

Five minutes, early in the day, sitting in front of each other with no phones. Each of you says what is in your head. It can be work, the children, your body, your desire.

Stay with I. I feel this. This is how I am experiencing this. The other person does not reply and does not justify. They say thank you, and then they take their turn, speaking from where they are standing rather than in response.

You cannot suggest intimacy carrying a full head. Get it out of your head so you can be in your body.

Practice two

One directional touch

Light a candle and set the space. One person gives, the other receives, and the receiver chooses how much they want to wear. The focus is relaxation and pleasure. It can be arousing. Sex is out of the picture, and that is what allows the body to open.

Give nothing until they have asked for it. Where do you want to be touched? Then follow their pleasure, and ask for feedback as you go. Do you like this. Do you want more of this.

Speaking your desire out loud, and having it respected, is how the boundary comes back. This is where polarity is rebuilt. Then you swap, and you receive.

Ten, twenty, thirty minutes. Whatever time you have. Do it daily.

Practice three

Mutual self-pleasure

Your arousal and your pleasure are your responsibility. Touching yourself in front of your partner is how that becomes shared rather than demanded.

It is exposing, so go in steps. You can start under the duvet, both of you touching yourselves, the light low. Then a little more light, a little more space between you, until you can watch and be watched.

Stay connected to your own body. Close your eyes when you need to come back to yourself, and open them when it feels natural. Decide together how many steps you need.

What builds

Honesty can feel conflictual, and it brings you closer. The more of your reality you share, the more intimacy you can experience, and the more charge there is in the space between you.
